IPL 2018: MS Dhoni Back to Chennai Super Kings

Returning franchises Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals can retain or use the RTM clause to secure the players who played for them respectively in IPL 2015 and who were part of Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions squads in IPL 2017.

As per the report by the Indian Express, one franchise was reportedly on the side of retaining as many as five years, while another proposed retention of one player per team.

The Indian Premier League Governing Council met in New Delhi on Wednesday alongwith the Committee of Administrators (CoA) to decide the player retention policy, salary cap, player regulations and other related issues, especially for the uncapped players, with ten seasons up for the cash-rich league. The salary cap for uncapped players has also been increased.

Either way, a franchise can retain or use RTM for a maximum of three players in the auction.

Although there are seemingly no hard feelings from the Ball family, they are no strangers to taking this course of action. Not only will he no longer play basketball for the school, the report states, he also won't be a student there.

In October this year, the IPL governing council floated a proposal, stating that CSK and RR can retain players who moved to Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions for two years following a draft.

Right to match or RTM basically gives a franchise the authority to match the highest bid for a player they didn't choose to retain pre-auction, and acquire his services again.

The total purse of each team will range from Rs 66 to 80 crores.

In the subsequent years, the franchises will be allowed to shell out Rs 82 crore (in 2019) and Rs 85 crore (in 2020).

In the secured players, a team may pick a maximum number of 3 capped Indian players, maximum of 2 overseas players, and a maximum of 2 uncapped Indian players.

Top players such as Virat Kohli, who turned up for Royal Challengers Bangalore till this season, will most likely come in the Rs 15 crore bracket as they will be the most sought after by their old teams. The player auction is tentatively set for February. The minimum spend will be 75 percent of the salary cap for each season.
