Police described the contents of the package as a "cylindrical object with cables, batteries and nails", but no triggering device.

There were no injuries reported in the evacuation or demolition of the package, which authorities said did not appear to include a fuse or other parts for a detonation.

A Christmas market in the German city of Potsdam has been evacuated after an explosive device was found close by. A follow-up police tweet clarified that no detonator was found.

The incident takes on special significance in light of last year's deadly terror attack on a Christmas market in a wealthy shopping area of Berlin.

Cyber Monday online spend is year's biggest

Germany is on high alert for militant attacks, almost a year after a Tunisian Islamist rammed a hijacked truck into a Christmas market in central Berlin, killing 11 people as well as the driver. The suspect, Anis Amri, fled to Italy after the December 19 attack and died in a shootout with police near Milan on December 23, 2016.

According to the initial account from police, the Syrian nationals had applied for asylum and were suspected of being ISIS members.

Security measures were in the spotlight as Berlin's Christmas markets officially opened on Monday. They'd also surveilled buildings in Berlin, the official alleged.
