Android Oreo (Go Edition) Released For Low-powered Phones

Google India Wednesday launched a number of applications and services for Indian users at its annual "Google for India" event. Even the Google search app will be available as Google Go, tailored for firsttime internet users.

"To make sure billions more people can get access to computing, it's important that entry-level devices are fully functioning smartphones that can browse the web and use apps", said Kamdar. These products and features are India-first, but they are not India-only. The app allows one to see how much free space is left on the phone and the SD card and can easily transfer files to SD card to free up the phone storage, right from the app. More than seventy billers will be supported, including utilities and direct-to-home service providers. The users will now be able to pay bills to telecom operators like Airtel, DishTV, Tata Power and more.

Google noted that Android has grown to more than 2 billion active devices around the world, with more users in India than the US. The update will offer accurate travel times and show customised route, voice and landmark navigation for two-wheeler riders.

Devices running Android Oreo (Go edition) will also come with Google's data saver features turned on by default.

The apps preinstalled on Android Oreo (Go edition) devices will include Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Google Play, Chrome, and the new Files Go app by Google. Fast forward to December 2017 and Android Oreo gets the Go treatment, ready for use by device manufacturers. It's bringing the smartest feature of Android to the feature phone. The new customized Go app is said to consume 40 percent less data.

Like we already said, the app is now available in India and Indonesia, and, it's available for download from Google Play Store. This special version of the Google Assistant in both English and Hindi will appear on the new Reliance JioPhones.

Internet Saathi - Google plans to expand its "Internet Saathi" programme, run in partnership with Tata Trusts.
