Amazon launches Prime programme in Singapore

Now Amazon, which had been offering its two-hour delivery service Prime Now for free on a R54.28 (R400.86) minimum purchase in Singapore without any membership fee, will start charging R121.47 per month after a limited introductory period.

Another service available to Singapore's Amazon Prime subscribers is video streaming, which will allow members to stream or download popular movies and TV series via the Amazon Prime Video app on Android and iOS mobile devices.

This will largely be of interest to merchants who sell on Amazon.com, as Prime Singapore offers free 2-hour delivery on tens of thousands of items but more importantly free global delivery on millions more items from Amazon US.

Gaming is also an upcoming entertainment industry, and Singapore Amazon Prime members can also enjoy access to gaming benefits on Twitch Prime at no additional cost.

This launch will put pressure on Lazada, the e-commerce site owned by Alibaba, which is Amazon's primary competitor in Southeast Asia.

But for a limited period, it goes for $2.99 a month, although Amazon did not specify for how long.

Yemen's strongman ex-president killed as battle rages in capital
The rivalry between Riyadh and Tehran, which has increased significantly in recent months, has exacerbated the conflict in Yemen. Images circulating on social media showed Saleh's body cradled in a floral blanket, with what appeared to be a large head wound.

This follows news that the American e-commerce giant has ended its FREE AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping service yesterday, 5 December.

Singapore will be the first country in Southeast Asia, and 16th globally, to launch Amazon Prime.

Perhaps anticipating Amazon's move into the region, Lazada launched a service called LiveUp that integrated Uber and Netflix with its own e-commerce offerings.

The Prime membership will entitle the customers to have access to more than five million products listed on Amazon's site in the United States.

A message on the checkout page of Amazon's USA store now states that "items shipped to addresses outside the U.S. are not eligible for free shipping". "We will keep making Prime better, adding even more selection and benefits".
