Washington state sues Uber for millions over data breach cover up

Uber has confirmed that 2.7 million United Kingdom customers had their personal details stolen in a 2016 cyber attack. "Nevertheless, the nature of the information now acknowledged to have been compromised, together with the allegation that the company concealed the breach without notifying affected drivers and consumers, and prior privacy concerns at Uber, makes this a serious incident that merits further scrutiny".

The breach was a further setback to the Silicon Valley company after London's transport regulator stripped it of its operating licence in September, citing Uber's approach to reporting serious criminal offences and background checks on drivers.

No financial details or journey records were taken by the attackers, who were paid $100,000 to delete the files, but some personal information was stolen and there are no guarantees the data was indeed destroyed.
