A particularly stern speech from Mr Trump in South Korea prompted Kim's government to brand him an "old lunatic" - the latest broadside in a long-running war of words between the two leaders.

North Korea tested its first missile just 22 days after Trump was inaugurated on January 20.

North Korean officials described Trump's trip as "nothing but a business trip by a warmonger to enrich the monopolies of the U.S. defense industry".

In September Kim described Trump as a mentally deranged U.S. dotard - a word used to refer to a weak and senile old person - whom he would tame with fire.

Trump has traded insults and threats with Kim in the past amid escalating tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

This is the first time three carrier strike groups will operate together since 2007 during an exercise off the coast of Guam, according to the Navy.
