"This is a moment I've dreamed of since I was a little girl", the 36-year-old Flanagan said.

An emotional Flanagan after her NYC Marathon win, the first by an American woman in 40 years.

The 2017 event was held just five days after a deadly Manhattan truck attack that left eight people dead.

Kamworor, who had finished second in 2014 behind Wycliffe Kipsang, was this time around the master as he broke away from among others Kipsang and Ethiopian Desisa Lelisa and Lemi Berhanu in the last three kilometers to win.

The last American woman to the marathon was Miki Gorman, who won back-to-back titles in 1976 and 1977.

American running great and 2009 NY victor Meb Keflezighi completed his 26th and final marathon in 11th place at 2:15:29, collapsing as he crossed the finish. Police had promised an unprecedented effort to secure the course, a plan including hundreds of extra uniformed patrol and plainclothes officers, roving teams of counterterrorism commandos armed with heavy weapons, bomb-sniffing dogs and rooftop snipers. "So I think it's an opportunity to show resilience and strength".

Kipsang, 35, won in Tokyo earlier this year and raced in September's Berlin Marathon but quit after 30km. The Kenyan runner was on a record pace before being halted by muscle cramping in cold, wet weather.

In the men's race, Kenyan Geoffrey Kamworor held off countryman Wilson Kipsang to clock 2:10.53 and win by three seconds. There's also Ghebreslassie, the reigning champ and first-ever major marathon victor from Eritrea. His personal best of 2:03:13 is tops in Sunday's field.

Comedian Kevin Hart is the biggest celebrity running NY. Kamworor separated from the pack late and seemed like he would cruise to his first major marathon victory, but Kipsang appeared on his heels in the final stretch.

Daylight Saving Time - The Controversy
This will remain the status quo until March 11, 2018, when clocks will be readjusted once more , this time by "springing forward". Daylight saving actually wasn't signed into law until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson made it an official practice .
