Brace yourselves: WhatsApp is experiencing a global outage

Today morning, messaging service WhatsApp was hit by a major global outage apparently because of a server problem, stopping millions of people from using it.

People have taken to Twitter to find out what is happening and the #whatsappdown is now trending.

According to DownDetector, there were problems across Europe although users in India, Pakistan, Singapore and Iraq also reported that they could not access the service.

South Africans began reporting issues with the service from 09:00 until 12:00, with some users still complaining of issues by 13:00. Disbelief morphed into extreme mirth as social media exploded in jokes, mostly at WhatsApp's expense.

Facebook had commented on the cause of the outage by the time of going to press.

Apart from "Delete for Everyone", WhatsApp has renamed the regular delete option, calling it Delete for Me.

Popular messaging app WhatsApp messenger is down which has forced its billions of users to switch from other forms of communication. "This issue has been fixed and we apologize for the inconvenience", a spokesperson said. The service even came back up in some region only 30 minutes after the first complaint.

Since a couple of hours, billions of users have resorted to Facebook and Twitter to reach their friends and family.
