Feinstein, the oldest USA senator, was first elected to the chamber in 1992, in a special election.

"Dianne's career has been one of firsts - she was the first woman President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, the first woman mayor of San Francisco, the first woman elected Senator of California, and the first woman member of the Senate Judiciary Committee", the statement says.

Her reelection bid comes amid some criticism of her record from the left wing of the Democratic Party.

"She's continuing her record of public service in the Senate, working on critical issues and the fight for the values we hold dear". And two prominent Latino Democrats, Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) with leadership from his 2016 presidential campaign, has vowed to back a primary challenger to oppose Feinstein. "She's an institution, and has a formidable political operation that's been around forever", the strategist told me.

"I strongly support Dianne's reelection campaign, and am thankful she is again offering to serve our state", Harris said. "I think the online left conversation about Feinstein being a pariah is probably a little overblown to voters in the state".
