Germany beat Costa Rica 2-1 in Group C opener in Goa

Germany beat Costa Rica 2-1 in Group C opener in Goa

Costa Rica qualified for the 2018 World Cup finals late on Saturday after Kendall Waston's goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time in San Jose gave them a 1-1 draw against Honduras and the point they needed to seal their spot in Russian Federation.

It was a low key affair in San Jose until the contest exploded into life during the latter stages, in a match delayed for 24 hours due to Tropical Storm Nate.

Costa Rica join Mexico in qualifying for the World Cup in Russian Federation and United States of America will fill the third CONCACAF space if they can beat Trinidad and Tobago in their next match.

The home side were on the verge of missing out on the point they needed but grabbed the equaliser in the dying seconds when Waston headed home a cross from Bryan Ruiz. Panama and Honduras have 10 points each.

This is the fifth time that Costa Rica has qualified for the global soccer tournament.

Kendall Waston scored in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time to clinch Costa Rica's second-straight World Cup berth and fifth overall.
