VW to shell out $24b by 2030

The company's Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller outlined the plans, the manufacturer's most significant move yet into the electric vehicle space, on the eve of the Frankfurt auto show.

Keeping in line with the ongoing shift to electric vehicles (EVs), German automotive manufacturing MNC Volkswagen announced their plans to electrify their 300-odd cars by 2030, thus projected to increase the number of hybrids and full-EVs available over the next decade.

To reinforce that message, Mueller appeared on stage emerging from an updated version of the driverless Volkswagen Sedric concept - a pointer to the brand's electric and autonomous future.

European auto bosses gathering for the Frankfurt Motor Show this week are beginning to address the realities of mass vehicle electrification, and its consequences for jobs and profit, their minds focused by government pledges to outlaw the combustion engine.

Volkswagen, at this week's Frankfurt motor show, has confirmed that a production version of its all-electric ID Crozz SUV concept will be revealed in 2020 alongside the emissions-free, four-door ID small vehicle. It will also feature the CleanAir system that has been newly developed by Volkswagen.

"We will have a long transition phase in which a wide variety of drive systems will coexist", he said. It is supposed to mark the new styling direction for future Skoda models, and if we were on Volkswagen's payroll working in the design department, we'd be anxious.

Hurricane Irma climbs Florida coast, unsafe storm surges feared
The hurricane's maximum sustained winds weakened to 85 miles per hour with additional weakening expected. The storm could also produce isolated tornadoes in the Carolinas early next week.

The Crozz II continues to have a unusual door layout with conventional hinges at the front and sliding ones at the rear.

Following on from the ID hatch and SUV, VW has already announced the ID Buzz microbus concept it revealed at the Pebble Beach concourse in America earlier this year would be released in 2022, taking the legendary campervan into the eco age. Volkswagen estimates that the I.D. Crozz II has a range of 500 km on a single charge. It's also expected to be able to charge to 80 percent in 30 minutes via a 150 kW DC fast charger.

If only Volkswagen had devoted as much time, money, and effort into developing competitive electric cars as it did devising diesel cheating technology, it might have been a market leader.
