Utah nurse arrested for refusing to give patient's blood

The July 26 footage, released Thursday, shows Alex Wubbels, a nurse at University Hospital in Salt Lake City, in a standoff with Detective Jeff Payne over whether the officer could draw blood from a patient who was unconscious following a vehicle crash.

After the incident, Wubbels accepted apologies from the Salt Lake City mayor and police chief, saying she felt they were honest.

Wubbels refused the request, citing a hospital policy which does not allow blood to be taken from an unconscious patient unless the patient is under arrest, unless the patient gives consent or unless there is a warrant from a judge. "Clearly this is an issue that is bigger than just me".

Meanwhile, Ms Wubbels' manager is heard on speakerphone in the background asking the detective why he is "blaming the messenger" and telling him he is "making a huge mistake, because you are threatening a nurse".

The nurse, Alex Wubbels, said officers did not have a warrant or meet any of the mandatory criteria needed for taking the blood. "Stop! I've done nothing wrong!" Why is this happening?

"I felt a duty to everyone that has ever had this happen to them that didn't have the evidence that I have to show it, and it seemed like a good time to do it", she said. "Why is he so angry?"

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert also weighed in Friday, a day after dramatic video surfaced of the exchange with nurse Alex Wubbels.

Detective Payne says, "We're done, we're done - you're under arrest". In a written report, the detective says he was sent to the hospital to get a blood sample from Gray to determine if he had illegal substances in his system after a July 26 traffic collision.

"The only job I has a nurse is to keep my patients safe", Wubbels said at the press conference.

"It is the most personal property I think that we can have besides our skin and bones and organs". The hospital said it had created a new policy with police that would preclude officers from arriving in person to seek blood samples.

According to Wubbels, she was taken out to the police cruiser and held for over twenty minutes before she was finally released.

"There was both an unlawful assault and an unlawful arrest", Karra Porter, Wubbels' attorney, told Fox13.

Payne pulls Wubbels outside of the hospital to handcuff her to her screams that she's done nothing wrong.
