Jose, Katia And Irma: 3 Hurricanes Now Formed In Atlantic

The storm strengthened to a hurricane by Wednesday evening. Irma, which is now a threat to Florida, was carrying winds of 185 miles per hour, the highest ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Regardless of where Irma lands, models seem to be in agreement that the remnants of the storm will continue north and eventually impact Virginia and many parts of the Mid-Atlantic.

Katia formed as a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico early Wednesday morning, then reached hurricane status by the late afternoon with sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.

The closest land mass Jose will approach is the northern Leeward Islands, the same ones Irma just devastated. Jose could grow into hurricane by Friday, the center says. It is the 11th named storm of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.

At this point, based on the current track of Hurricane Irma, our weekend should be dry, sunny and cool. And finally, Tropical Storm Katia formed in the Gulf of Mexico this morning. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 miles per hour (120 km/h) with higher gusts.

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder or AIRS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Tropical Storm Jose as it was consolidating. Tropical Storm Katia formed early Wednesday off the coast of Mexico.

Roughly 10 of these smaller islands - such as St. Martin, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis - were pounded by hurricane conditions.

An emergency declaration for the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico was approved by US President Donald Trump, allowing the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other agencies to clear the debris and provide other services that will be largely financed by the US government.

Jose is moving in some of the same path as Irma, so could hit people in the Leeward Islands as they try to recover from the effects of the "potentially catastrophic" hurricane.

Katia is expected to reach the coastline of oil-producing Veracruz state sometime between Friday and Saturday as a category 1 hurricane, said the head of Mexico's water authority Conagua, Roberto Ramirez.

Interests elsewhere in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as well as Cuba, the central and northwestern Bahamas, and Florida have been advised to monitor the progress of Irma.
