ISRO launches IRNSS-1H, eighth regional navigation satellite

India is ready to launch its first private-sector built navigation satellite from Sriharikota, a leading rocket launch centre in Andhra Pradesh, a south-eastern Indian state.

The first three stages of the satellite launch were completed as intended.

ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar said the mission was however unsuccessful.

ISRO had launched seven satellites - IRNSS-1G on April 28, 2016, IRNSS-1F (March 10, 2016), IRNSS-1E (January 20, 2016), IRNSS-1D (March 28, 2015), IRNSS-1C (October 16, 2014), IRNSS-1B (April 4, 2014) and IRNSS-1A on July 1, 2013.

The PSLV has seen 41 consecutive successful missions after a failure in its maiden developmental flight in 1993. "During the operation the heat shield has not separated".

PSLV-C39 launch vehicle placed IRNSS-1H into orbit, but the heat shield covering the satellite failed to separate to release the satellite.

The launch is scheduled to take place at 06:25 pm on Tuesday and will be from the Second Launch Pad (SLP) of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR.

In its routine reports , the IAEA has said that Iran is in compliance with its landmark agreement with six major powers.

The rocket will be taking the IRNSS-1H satellite to sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (sub-GTO) and will be launched in its XL configuration with six strap-on boosters.

The satellite was to replace one of NAVIC's seven satellites that are malfunctioning. Accurate timekeeping lies at the heart of navigation systems since the determination of a person's position on earth is subject to the accurate calculation of delays in signal transmission from the satellite to earth. Such clocks are a crucial part of the navigation system. The Rs 1420-crore independent regional navigation satellite system is developed by India and is similar to Global Positioning System (GPS) of the USA, which has 24 satellites in the orbit. These navigation services are provided through a software application on a smartphone.

The navigation system would have been helpful for railways in tracking trains and also giving alerts for unmanned level crossings. It provides two types of services - standard positioning service and restricted service. Just like the other seven satellites in the NavIC, this satellite too was to orbit almost 36,000 kms above the earth.
