"Of course winning or losing that final is a big change, but I am very happy about all the things that happened to me and I am going to fight to win another title here".

Now Anderson is set to become the first South African to contest a US Open final for 52 years and, at 32 in the world, the lowest ranked player to make the final in the Big Apple since the introduction of the computer ranking system in 1973.

Anderson, 31, has won just one set against Nadal to date and was pummelled in straight sets in their only previous Grand Slam meeting at the 2015 Australian Open.

Standing between the Johannesburg-born Anderson and victory will be Nadal, who is not only a world No 1, but entered the tournament as the top seed and boasts an impressive 15 Grand Slam titles. He's an wonderful fighter.

And he said: "I knew in my mind there was opportunity there, but I must be honest, I didn't focus really too much on that". "I really need to be dominant and control proceedings as much as possible, because if you let him do it, it's very hard", said Anderson, the lowest-ranked US Open finalist since the ATP rankings began in 1973.

"It's been an awesome season, of course, after a couple of years with some troubles, injuries, tough moments", Nadal said, per the Associated Press. On the eve of the final, Nadal said he was rooting for the South African during his trysts with injuries.
