The storm weakened to a Category 3 hurricane Saturday morning, but is expected to strengthen again before making landfall in Florida, forecasters said.

"That's more what we're concerned about (for the Charlotte-area) specifically", Carroll said.

Hurricane Irma wasn't the only vortex that the southeastern USA had to worry about Sunday.

"My family only started to worry when the path of the storm started to turn west", Duncan said. John Ward, the emergency operations manager of Clay County, says crews have pulled 46 people from flooded homes by early Monday and an undetermined number are still stranded as the area's creeks and ponds are getting record flooding.

The newest models for Hurricane Irma show the storms remnants may bring strong winds and rain to a large portion of Alabama next week.

Hurricane Irma has already claimed at least four lives, as it batters Florida , having earlier killed 28 people in the Caribbean. Another Floridian, Marcelo Clavijo , also said he helped in the rescue of the manatees.

It left more than 20 people dead across the Caribbean and as it moved north over the Gulf of Mexico's bathtub-warm water of almost 90 degrees, it was expected to regain strength.

The hurricane's maximum sustained winds weakened to 85 miles per hour with additional weakening expected.

The worst of Irma is likely yet to come for much of Middle Georgia.

After Monday morning, there won't be another night with crisp lows in the 50s for at least a week. "I just hope they don't go through this storm surge".
