Ultimately, crews from fifteen of Alabama's rural electric cooperatives are being sent to help five Florida electric cooperatives with power restoration in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

The organization's release says line crews from any US electric cooperative can join the effort because the network of transmission and distribution infrastructure owned by cooperatives is built to federal standards. Spokesman Michael DeFreeuw said crews have always stepped up when volunteers are needed. Electric cooperatives expect to be working to restore power for days to weeks, according to officials with Dixie Electric.

Crews from five other electric cooperatives are heading to a variety of places in Georgia and SC. The first hurricane they responded to was in 2004, when Hurricane Ivan hit the Gulf Coast. Its emergency assistance program began in 1948.
