Cleanup begins as Irma moves out of Florida

Irma moved north into Florida on Sunday with powerful wind, rain and flooding, swamping parts of Naples and Miami on opposite coasts before moving to the centre of the state.

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville says storm surge flooding exceeds the record set in 1965 during Hurricane Dora.

Emergency workers in Daytona Beach rescued 25 people with a high-water truck after they were suddenly caught in an onslaught of wind and rain.

"We're grateful that the brunt of the storm will miss us", Cooper said in a press conference Monday, "but our entire state will see some impacts from Irma and especially Western North Carolina".

Captain Lee Rosbach was just one of the millions of Florida residents bracing for Hurricane Irma as it hit the Sunshine State this weekend.

The storm killed at least 28 people as it raged westward through the Caribbean on the way to Florida, devastating several small islands, and grazing Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti before pummelling parts of Cuba's north coast with 11m waves. Officials warned it could take weeks for electricity to be restored to everyone.

For those still at home, it was already too late to escape the wrath of what could be the worst hurricane in storm-prone Florida.

More than 800,000 Georgia Power and EMC customers mostly in coastal and south Georgia were without power and around 800 flights had been canceled at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Cooper said workers are working to clear roads, including a rock slide on US 221.

No deaths in Florida were immediately linked to the storm.

Some 6.3 million people in the state were told to evacuate before Irma arrived.

"The storm related to Irma has been moving slower than expected, but is entering the Columbus area now". It gradually weakened as it headed through the state, becoming a tropical storm and then a tropical depression on Monday.

Other big power utilities in Florida are units of Emera Inc and Southern Co, which also operates the biggest electric companies in Georgia and Alabama.

State government offices as well as some schools in Georgia will be closed both Monday and Tuesday. Later on, there would not be much to see as the surging rains and floods carry on into the evening. At least 27 people died from Irma in the Caribbean, reports said.

Support for content in 4K resolution has been available in TV sets for quite some time, but most households haven't had a 4K set. The Apple TV interface has not exactly been butter smooth however this seems to be taken care of by the new layout.
