In a press release announcing plans to build a second headquarters, Amazon points out it is ranked No. 1 on Fast Company's list of Most Innovative Companies, No. 2 on Fortune's World's Most Admired Companies, No. 1 on The Harris Poll's Corporate Reputation survey, and No. 2 on LinkIn's U.S. most desirable companies list.

Amazon announced plans Thursday to invest some $5 billion in a second North American headquarters, in a fresh sign of the phenomenal growth of the diversified United States technology giant. The new headquarters will bring along 50,000 high-paying jobs.

Amazon has began a search for a second United States headquarters which could house up to 50,000 members of staff.

In its release, the company emphasized that HQ2 will be a complete headquarters for the company, not a satellite office, complete with new teams and executives, and an option for current employees to relocate or run teams in both HQ2 and Seattle.

Kohli's second straight century seals 5-0 series sweep
Or Kohli could include both at the expense of Shardul Thakur, though the skipper will most probably want the younger one to play. If he can reclaim some form in the T20, however, the argument for sticking around for a few more series might grow stronger.

The company said there are now 40,000 employees at its 33-building, 8.1 million-square-foot Seattle campus.

Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, is expanding rapidly and also has been opening fulfillment centers across the USA and the globe as it broadens its offerings from books and toys to groceries.

Not to be outdone, suburban Baltimore County also made clear it intends to try and land the deal to be home to the new Amazon headquarters.

Cities and regional economic development organizations have been invited to submit proposals, and they will likely scramble to offer incentives and tax breaks for Amazon to consider their area.

Toronto's Mayor John Tory said in a statement that the city is a "prime candidate" for Amazon's second headquarters. And the projected employment of as many as 50,000 is 10 times the number of workers Toyota has at its new campus. Some HQ1 employees will have the opportunity to choose whether they want to continue working at HQ1 or, if they would prefer, they can move to HQ2.

Cities and states are being advised by Amazon.com Inc.to visit http://www.amazon.com/amazonHQ2 for more information.

Proposals are due between October 16 and October 19.
