Partial lunar eclipse dazzles night skies from India to Spain

In honor of the event, officials over at the Shreve Memorial Library are hosting an All-American Eclipse Viewing party at the Broadmoor Library in Shreveport.

Of course, you've seen plenty of full and new moons that haven't resulted in eclipses.

If you miss out this upcoming solar eclipse, don't worry -the next one that will fly over the United States happens in 2024. An eclipse only occurs when the new moon cruises between the sun and the Earth, and a total solar eclipse is a much rarer event.

Tropical Storm Franklin forms over the Caribbean
That's a designation that means it is on the cusp of becoming either a tropical depression or a tropical storm. After this, the storm will emerge in the Bay of Campeche where it could potentially reach hurricane strength.

For the first time in nearly 40 years the path of the moon's shadow passes through the continental United States. People living on the east coast of Brazil could also see the eclipse. "That is the light passing through the earth's atmosphere on its way to the moon and is known as the penumbral phase of the eclipse". Scientists will be able to take ground-based and airborne observations over a period of an hour and a half to complement the wealth of data and images provided by space assets. In a partial eclipse, the Moon only covers a portion of the Sun.

A lunar eclipse, such as tonight's, always occurs about two weeks before or after a solar eclipse, as will happen on August 21 this month.

Unfortunately, for CT, we won't be in the path of totality with this rare event, but you will have the opportunity to see nearly 70% of the sun vanish during the day on August 21st.

BJP youth leader arrested, Dhanera BJP chief accused in Rahul attack
He is the man who threw the stone at Rahul Gandhi. "BJP workers threw stones at me, it hit my PSO (personal security officer)". Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala accused Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani of shielding the goons behind the attack.

You never want to look directly at the sun without appropriate protection except during totality.

Here are some stunning photos show the partial eclipse in full display, from various locations including India, Pakistan, Switzerland, the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio in the south of Athens, the sky over Frankfurt in Germany, Turkey, France and Africa. These filters are being sold as eclipse glasses, where each eye has its own filter.

NASA has the eclipse lasting about two hours, and peaking at around 18:20 Coordinated Universal Time, or around 2:20 p.m. The biggest cities in the path include Nashville; Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina; Salem, Oregon; Casper, Wyoming; and just partially within, St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri.
