Trump tells senators House health bill 'mean'

President Donald Trump told Texas Sen.

U.S. President Donald Trump called the Republican health care bill "mean" on Tuesday and used vulgar language to describe it during a closed-door lunch at the White House with 15 Republican senators.

But people aren't as accepting of the Senate bill as Trump seems to be.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says the House measure would leave 23 million more Americans without health insurance in a decade because of its deep cuts to health-care spending including Medicaid for low-income Americans.

In addition, the Republican majority in the Senate is much narrower than in the House of Representatives and, according to current rules, Trump would need the votes of the 52 Republican Senators plus eight Democrats on his side.

Trump made clear multiple times that he was pleased that the Senate negotiations appeared to be moving away from where the House version of the repeal and replace effort ended up, according to three sources familiar with the meeting.

It is good news that senators may make their bill more centrist rather than, as the House did, more austere in order to pass it. At the time Trump said he was "so confident" the bill would get through the Senate.

"The message was that we need to get this done, it needs to be done right, but sooner is better than later", said Sen.

Trump previously heaped praise on the bill after it was passed in a ceremony at the White House Rose Garden in May, saying it was "very, very incredibly well-crafted, and hailed it as "a great plan".

The bill requires agencies to verify an applicant's Social Security number before the Treasury Department pays the tax credit to a health insurer.

Given the public's poor reception of the House bill - recent polls showed more than half opposed it, and less than one-fourth supported it - you'd think Senate Republicans would be reluctant to follow a similar path. "So I will just say that is disconcerting". The House bill repealed $1 trillion worth of Obamacare taxes while the Senate bill is likely to be more generous, costing more money.

Gennett's two-run home run off Gant, who was making his Cardinals debut in relief of Wainwright, made the score 10-0. Josh Hamilton was the previous player to hit four home runs in one game, for Texas against Baltimore in May 2012.

The House of Representatives narrowly approved its version of repeal last month but Senate Republicans have been unable to coalesce around their own version of a bill, with moderates and conservatives pushing in different directions in meetings behind closed doors.

Republicans are trying to win over more moderate voices such as Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and more conservative members, Portman said, "No, but that wasn't the goal of it".

Obamacare "had been broken and it's been a broken promise", Trump added.

If that doesn't sound like how democracy is supposed to work to you, well god dammit, I think you're onto something.

"To call a bill that he pushed "mean" leaves us scratching our heads", Brat said. Indeed, if they don't release the bill until after the CBO's report, and hold to their plan to take a vote on the legislation before their July Fourth recess, the public will have nearly no time to absorb it, let alone convey their sentiments to their lawmakers.
