Ronaldo summoned to court, Mourinho accused of tax fraud

Ronaldo summoned to court, Mourinho accused of tax fraud

Reports have since suggested that Ronaldo may have chose to leave Real Madrid amid claims he is angry at his treatment by Spanish authorities and that Portugal has launched its own tax fraud probe into the world's highest paid athlete.

Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano, among others, have already been convicted.

Mourinho's management team - Gestifute - and Real Madrid did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment.

Spanish prosecutors said on Tuesday they had filed a claim against the current Manchester United manager on two counts of tax fraud in 2011 and 2012.

Prosecutors said he had failed to declare revenues from his image rights in his Spanish income tax declarations from 2011 and 2012, "with the aim of obtaining illicit profits".

Mourinho left Real Madrid in 2013 to manage English club Chelsea for a second spell before signing with United in 2016.

Both Ronaldo and Mourinho are clients of football super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has been summoned to appear before the court at Pozuelo de Alarcon, just outside Madrid, on June 27.

But a statement released by Mourinho's representatives Gestifute Media said he had not been informed personally of the accusations.

"To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted Jose Mourinho or his advisers who were hired for the inspection process", the statement said.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, has come out fighting in a row with the Spanish tax authorities, claiming he paid more than €26million (£23m) between 2010-2013.

The 32-year-old Portuguese star is facing four charges of fraud through offshore companies between 2011 and 2014 and will appear before a judge on July 31, judicial sources told AFP.

The accusations against Ronaldo have caused speculation in Portugal and Spain that he is considering leaving the country to play elsewhere.

They claim that Mourinho, who took over at United a year ago, failed to declare €3.3 million (RM15.77 million) during his time in the Spanish capital - €1.6 million in 2011 and €1.7 million in 2012.

Last year, Messi and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi, were found guilty on three counts of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1 million euros ($4.6 million) from income made from image rights.
