Missing US sailors found dead in damaged ship

The US Seventh Fleet said on Sunday that the bodies of a number of sailors who were missing after the US Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald collided with a container vessel were found in flooded compartments of the damaged ship.

The Fitzgerald, an Aegis guided missile destroyer, collided with the Philippine-flagged merchant vessel more than three times its size some 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka early on Saturday.

Navy divers yesterday found a number of sailors' bodies aboard the stricken USS Fitzgerald that collided with a container ship in the busy sea off Japan last Saturday.

The remains are being taken to the Naval Hospital Yokosuka for identification.

Fitzgerald's commander, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, was evacuated by a Japanese naval helicopter while USA military copters evacuated two injured U.S. sailors.

USA aircraft and vessels, as well as those from the Maritime Self-Defense Force and Japan Coast Guard, had been looking for the missing personnel since the two ships crashed in the pre-dawn hours Saturday.

He spent the previous two seasons in the Swiss pro league, where he was coached by current Ottawa Senators coach Guy Boucher. The Blackhawks traded draft picks with Dallas before selecting defender Henri Jokiharju No. 29 overall.

The Navy statement adds, "USS Dewey (DDG 105) got underway this morning as well as several U.S. Navy aircraft, and will join Japanese Coast Guard and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopters, ships and aircraft to render whatever assistance may be required". The gash in the ship hidden below the water's surface took in the ocean water at a fast pace, flooding the compartments below the waterline. All three were in stable condition at the US Naval Hospital, said Cmdr.

Aucoin said the Navy will launch an investigation into the collision because "we owe it to our families and the Navy to understand what happened".

The names of the missing sailors were being withheld pending notification of their families.

Aucoin wouldn't speculate on the cause of the collision.

Donald Trump tweeted that his thoughts and prayers were with crew members and their families.

The captain, Commander Bryce Benson, suffered a head injury and was airlifted to shore, and Mr Aucoin said he is lucky to have survived.

Castaic Lake fire is now 60 percent contained
The fire destroyed two outbuildings, and one firefighter battling the flames was taken to the hospital with minor injures. Information will be updated as it is released and confirmed by fire officials.

He said Sunday that he would appoint a flag officer to lead an investigation into the collision, though it was not clear how long the probe is expected to last.

The collision had resulted in some flooding and damage to the ship's starboard side.

CORRECTION (June 17, 2017, 11:40 p.m. EST): An earlier version of this article erroneously reported that all seven of the missing sailors had been found.

USA and Japanese aircraft and surface ships launched a search looking for the unaccounted-for sailors.

Obara said the Coast Guard was interviewing the crew of the Crystal to determine, among other things, whether negligent piloting by either side contributed to the collision.

The Fitzgerald is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer with a crew of approximately 330 sailors.
