DHS: Russians Tried to Hack 21 State Election Systems

The testimony came during a morning of double-barreled intelligence committee hearings - one in the House and one in the Senate - that underscored the US intelligence community's months-old determination that Russian Federation attempted to meddle in the election.

He demurred on the final number of USA states whose voting systems were scanned or probed by the Russian government, saying that he had not had access to intelligence since he left government.

Russian hackers targeted 21 US states" election systems in a year ago " s presidential race, a Department of Homeland Security official told Congress on Wednesday.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) pressed Johnson to say whether he believed there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian hackers, something a special prosecutor is now investigating.

On Twitter, Trump challenged the Obama administration for failing to stop the Russians.

Erdogan rejects Arab demands; Turkish troops stay in Qatar
British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Friday that any conditions placed on Qatar should be "measured and realistic ". Turkey has been a powerful and outspoken regional ally of Qatar after the Arab countries cut diplomatic ties.

These statements given by Johnson in testimony for the House Intelligence Committee illustrated issues the Obama administration faced during the last election cycle, which were not announced publicly until October. "Why didn't they stop them?" he asked.

He tweeted Thursday that the Democratic National Committee turned down an offer from the Department of Homeland Security "to protect against hacks (long prior to election)".

Trump on Thursday appeared to dismiss the DNC hack as "all a big Dem HOAX!" in a tweet posted early in the morning.

ADVERTISEMENT "There was an ongoing election, and many would criticize us for perhaps taking sides in the election, so that had to be carefully considered", Johnson told the House Intelligence Committee, echoing other former officials who have described the decisionmaking process in the White House last fall. Jeh also answered questions about what then-President Barack Obama knew, as well as coordination between the DNC and the DHS. "The intelligence community has no doubt that the Russians attacked the DNC in an effort to disrupt our election".

"In retrospect, it would have been easy for me to say I should have brought a sleeping bag and camped out in front of the DNC in the late summer", Johnson testified.

US Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson testifies before a House hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, on March 26, 2015. "Those who expressed negative views stated that running elections in this country was the sovereign and exclusive responsibility of the states, and they did not want federal intrusion, a federal takeover, or federal regulation of that process", he said.

"Certainly it's good news that the attempts in 2016 did not change the results of the elections". According to Johnson's testimony, the administration had known months before in mid-August about Russian efforts to target state electoral systems.

He also said he wasn't aware that the FBI had opened a counterintelligence investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Mueller was examining whether Trump or others sought to obstruct the probe, a person familiar with the inquiry told Reuters. Trump has inconsistently said Russian Federation may or may not have been responsible for the hacking but has dismissed allegations that his associates colluded with Moscow as "fake news".
