Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole also told the Seattle Times that neither officers had a Taser.

Friends and family members say the 30-year-old pregnant woman shot and killed by police this week was so much more than authorities' account of an unstable person who confronted two officers with kitchen knives and had previous run-ins with the law.

Her killing has prompted angry protests. It seems that Merrick Bobb, the federal monitor overseeing Seattle police reforms, needs to reopen his investigation.

Sgt. Sean Whitcomb, a Seattle police spokesman, said Wednesday that officers are trained to focus on "time, distance and shielding" in protecting themselves and others from a threat: "What is my need to intervene at this very moment?" Two officers, rather than one, went to the apartment because of her prior history with police. But it suddenly escalated with the officers saying "get back" repeatedly.

Lyles had four children, and three of them - ages 11, 4 and 1 - were at home when she called police.

'And at that point, fearing for what was about to happen, what she would do to me, um, being stuck in that spot, I fired my handgun, ' he told investigators, noting he remembered hearing shots coming from Anderson's location.

"The officers immediately performed first aid", but fire medics arrived and determined she had died, the police department said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

The hallway video from her apartment showed Lyles leaving and entering, but didn't show anyone else going inside her unit.

Anderson's description was contained in transcripts of recorded interviews with Anderson and another officer, Steven McNew, who shot Lyles after she summoned the officers to her Northeast Seattle apartment to investigate what she described as a burglary of her apartment.

Both officers were equipped with less lethal force options, police said.

James Bible, a lawyer for the Lyles family, noted that on an audio recording released by police, one officer asks the other to "Tase" Lyles, but the other responds that he doesn't have one.

After the shooting, McNew said, 'one of the little babies crawls out from behind and right on top of her, her upper body, you know resting his head against her'.
