An air raid that Russian Federation claimed killed the leader of the Islamic State group has reportedly killed an elderly hay dealer and his extended family instead, an Iraqi intelligence official has told The New Arab.

The death of the Islamic State supremo has been falsely reported several times since both Russian Federation and a US-led air coalition began hammering IS positions in Syria and Iraq in 2015.

"On May 28, after drones were used to confirm the information on the place and time of the meeting of ISIS leaders, between 00:35 and 00:45, Russian air forces launched a strike on the command point where the leaders were located", a statement from the ministry said.

Although numerous media reports have speculated on al-Baghdadi's death in US-led coalition airstrikes earlier, neither the Pentagon, nor the Iraqi or Syrian militaries have confirmed the claims.

There have been several reports of Baghdadi's demise over the years, and his status has always been one of speculation.

The US State Department designated Baghdadi as terrorist in 2011.
