To many Americans, Memorial Day has lost its meaning


Hats from each branch of the military were displayed at the fallen comrade table. VFW Post 5242 and the American Legion Post 89 in Pella remembered fallen veterans with a special ceremony this afternoon at the Pella Memorial Building. This is our way of showing thanks for what they did and bringing attention to veterans and the serious issues they face when they return home.

During the Civil War, women's groups across the South gathered informally to decorate the graves of Confederate dead. November's "Veterans Day" replaced Memorial Day for that goal.
