Pineda throws Yankees to Major League Baseball victory

After an off day, 24-year-old LHP Jordan Montgomery will make his major league debut for NY on Wednesday after winning the No. 5 starter's job.

However, left fielder Aaron Hicks coaxed an eight-pitch walk, bringing home New York's first run and ending Snell's outing after just 4.2 innings complete.

Montgomery allowed three hits on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 4.2 innings.

Before the game, Yankees manager Joe Girardi speculated Montgomery's experience pitching for the Gamecocks in the 2012 College World Series would minimize his pre-game jitters as he has already pitched on a national stage.

New York Yankees' Aaron Judge connects for a two-run home run against the Tampa Bay Rays during the seventh inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, April 12, 2017, in New York.

The Yankees' home opener went about as well as it could have for NY. Posey will be re-evaluated today but, "He's doing good, he's doing fine", Manager Bruce Bochy said.

Judge homered for the third straight game when he drove a 1-1 pitch from Erasmo Ramirez well over the wall in center field and onto the netting above Monument Park. According to Baseball Prospectus, Montgomery is slightly ahead of schedule for an MLB start for his age and the number of innings he's pitched. Leading 2-0 at the time, Pineda then fanned Brad Miller.
