Jake Long Announces Retirement from NFL After 9-Year Career

Nearly exactly nine years since the Dolphins made him the top overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, offensive tackle Jake Long has announced his retirement.

In a statement on Twitter, Long wrote, "As I continue with my recent rehab I realize that although my heart and mind still want to play, my body is telling me something completely different".

Timing being what it sometimes can be, Long announces his retirement today just as the 2017 NFL Draft is about to begin four short days from now, in Philadelphia.

The Rams cut long in 2015 and he bounced around the league spending time with the Atlanta Falcons, Baltimore Ravens, and Minnesota Vikings.

According to Spotrac.com, Long earned more than $71 million in the NFL. Most recently a member of the Vikings' offensive line, he was signed by the franchise back in October following season-ending injuries to fellow tackles Matt Kalil and Andre Smith. Mr. (Stephen) Ross, Tony Sparano, Bill Parcells. He appeared in just four games previous year (three starts) with the Minnesota Vikings as a torn Achilles tendon on November 13 ended his season.

Long, who played his college football at the University of MI, was a second team All-Big 10 Conference player, as well as a two-time consensus All-American and the Big 10 Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2006 and 2007. Long's spotty availability was a significant reason the Dolphins allowed him to leave in free agency four years ago. "I will always be a proud and lifelong Miami Dolphin!".
