Man City knocked out of Champions League in thrilling encounter

Pep Guardiola's side blew a 5-3 first leg lead as they lost 3-1in Wednesday's last 16 second leg and crashed out of the competition on away goals.

Hardly the way Guardiola, twice a victor as manager of a world-beating Barcelona side, wanted to celebrate taking charge of his 100th match in European competition.

But Manchester City have actually gone backwards under him in Europe, and the biggest name in football management was made to look a complete novice here.

"When you go to the Premier League, you have six, seven, eight teams who are fighting to win".

In an exclusive interview with Omnisport, Eriksson - who spent a year in charge of City in 2007-08 - said: "If you are the coach of Bayern Munich, Barcelona or Real Madrid, the chances to win something are huge".

Thirteen other states making up more than 40 percent of the auto market have signed on to California's program. Prominent among them was the chief executive of industry lobbying group Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

On the other hand, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone lauded his side's determination to keep making their mark on the Champions League after they reached the quarter-finals for a fourth consecutive season.

Guardiola, however, refused to blame his tactics or his defence. We gave them too much respect and against these kind of players we put ourselves in danger.

That is either naive or just reckless. Manchester City did not have a shot at goal till the 62nd minute and stars like Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bryune and David Silva were not given any space by Monaco to initiate moves.

City were very bad. Simply terrible.

“We played an exceptional second half, but the first one we forgot to be there, ” Guardiola told BT Sport. We tried to react but they have quality and we suffered. In the second half we tried to win the game, we tried to play.

20 - Since the current format of the tournament has been in place, there have been 20 instances of a side scoring three or more away goals in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie and all of them have progressed.

Guardiola also admitted that he may have struggled to communicate his wishes to his players at Stade Louis II, especially in the first half when City quickly slipped 2-0 down.

You can only go all-out attack if your team actually try to attack and, for long periods, there was a complete breakdown between midfield and the forward line. He considers Monaco right up there with the best attacking sides he's faced. Their defence is nearly non-existent at times and that is just the sort of team that we can thrive against.

Last season, Manchester City were England's sole representatives in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and this time it is Leicester City. But City were at least building up a head of steam.
